"NATO Missile Not Used to Protect Israel"


Turkish President Abdullah Gul said the missile defense system of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Turkey is not designed to protect Israel.

"The whole statement saying that the European missile defense system in Turkey is designed to protect Israel is a black propaganda concocted by Israel itself," said Gul, told Trend, Thursday (15/03/2012).

Gul also asserted, Israel is not a member of NATO, therefore, may not protect Israel despite NATO missile defense system in place in Turkey. Gul also explained that NATO missiles in his country not used to attack Iran.

Decisions regarding the placement of NATO missile defense system in Turkey was initiated in the NATO Summit in Lisbon in 2011 and then, Turkey was very supportive of this move. Meanwhile, the placement of the radar in military bases Kurecik NATO, Turkey was signed by Deputy Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioglu and Turkish Ambassador to the United States for Turkey, in Ankara in September 2011.

Although Turkey has been explained that the missiles are not intended to Iran, NATO General Secretary Anders Fogh Rasmussen to express precisely a distinct statement. Rasmussen clearly stated, the missiles are designed to be wary of attacks from Iran and even North Korea.

Iran was quite disappointed with the attitude of Turkey related to the placement of anti-missile weapons. Iran had said that the missiles was none other than the eyes of Israel.
